We’re back! You might have noticed a lack of posts in the last few days. Well, we’ve been out west in Winnipeg attending the wedding of our good friends Angie and Tyson (see the incredible photos here: http://kampblog.com ) and have just returned back to Montreal. It was a fantastic trip with some really fantastic people. But now we’…  Read More →

All right, I’m going to be straight with you here. I haven’t seen a single one of the films being released on Blu-ray this week. This is rare. Either I went out of my way to avoid these movies when they were in theatres ( The Bounty Hunter ) or was just too swamped to make it out to a screening ( Chloe, In Bruges, Greenberg , etc…) Also unusual is that I wasn’t sent a single review copy for films out on Blu this week....

Looks like we’re back on track, over here at The Blu-ray Blog. We’ve been hack-free for several days now and finally able to begin playing catch-up on all the news and reviews we’ve had waiting in the wings for the last couple of weeks. But first, before we hit you up with any more content, …  Read More →

It’s been a hell of a week. I don’t know if you’ve been following Twitter as we suffer through the odyssey that is keeping The Blu-ray Blog online, but I’ve been forced to take the site down and rebuild it TWICE in the last seven days! You know Blu-ray disc has finally hit the big-time when little sites that talk about it, like this one, become targets. I’m really sorry if the non-stop barrage of spam ads has upset...

Not a bad week on Blu, if I do say so myself, despite the fact that there are far fewer discs shipping this week than last. The top pick is an obvious one here but maybe not the most exciting high-def release today. For some reason I always seem to find myself having greater anticipation for obscure catalogue titles than the shiny new blockbusters. Perhaps it’s because newer work is almost always guaranteed to look and sound brilliant...

All right, you know the drill. Despite the fact that there’s a pretty major new TV-on-Blu release, a new Criterion Collection disc easily trumps it as this weeks “must-buy” title. Now, don’t give me any guff over this. I’m a day late with this post and sweating my bits off in this ridiculous Montreal heat. Is it summer already? Sheesh… 1. STAGECOACH John Wayne made movies before the 1939 film, Stagecoach ,...

This week is a no-brainer for me, as the number one pick is one of my all time favourite films! The rest of the Blu-ray discs out this week are a bit of a mixed bag, though, with some decent, new Hollywood fliks (and some truly awful ones), some catalogue titles and a couple of pretty decent anime releases. 1. WALKABOUT My old Criterion Collection edition of Walkabout has been one of the most treasured DVDs in my vast collection for years now....

Wow. There isn’t even a contender for the number one slot this week that can stand up to my top pick. I mean, I dearly love some of the other films newly available on Blu today but man, the top pick rules them all! In addition to one of the most necessary Blu-ray purchases of the year hitting the shops today, you’ll also find some genuine classics from the 70s and 80s, some …  Read More →

This might not be the biggest, most overwhelming release week of the year but there are a couple Blu-ray discs here that any serious collection simply can’t be without. And everything else this week somehow seems lesser as a result. That’s not to say the other films aren’t worth watching but when you’ve got two behemoths of cinema vying for your attention as these discs are, it’s tough to validate giving their competitors...

Annnnnd we’re back. It’s been a long, long weekend for The Blu-ray Blog. Everyone was taking some time off, spending the days with family and just taking the opportunity to get in some rest and relaxation. I traveled back home to Ontario to celebrate my nephew’s tenth birthday! Many video-games were played. Many Blu-ray discs were watched. Many cupcakes were scarfed down. I think, between the sedentary celebrations and the...

I would say this is an “underwhelming” week but that I truly love the top two films on my list. It’s just that beyond that, the pickin’s get a little slim, unless you’re into b-grade horror, kids fliks or anime. There aren’t really any surprises hidden here, so if you don’t see anything you like after a quick perusal, I’d recommend hitting up the Amazon sale lists . 1. SHERLOCK HOLMES I skipped...

I’ve been writing this “ Weekly Picks ” column now for over a year now (on and off.) It’s time to switch things up. Instead of simply highlighting a random selection of the weeks new Blu-ray releases, it seems to me that it might prove more useful to present an ordered list of the best of the best. So, starting this week, the “Weekly Picks” column will become a “ Top 5 New Releases ” article! How...
