‘The Horseman’ is not (repeat NOT) a western. Revenge films are among the most basic and often among the most satisfying genres in all of moviedom. It doesn’t take long to set up a situation where we find an emotionally devastated protagonist (usually the relative of someone who has been slain, or at the very least kidnapped), give him the tools to enact his justice on the perpetrators, and then simply sit back and watch the chips...

A masterpiece of sight, sound, and story debuts on Blu-ray as a stunning package from Paramount. Is one more body going to make a difference? Road to Perdition is an innately gorgeous exhibit of art moving at 24 frames per second. The film, as directed by Sam Mendes ( Jarhead ) and photographed by Conrad Hall ( American Beauty ), is as visually captivating as it is thematically enthralling, a potent combination to be sure … Video It’s...

Highly Recommended The Movie:   Once again Criterion brings an important film tomarket.   This time they’ve brought TerryZwigoff’s important documentary Crumb to Blu-ray with an excellent transfer anda wonderful set of bonus features.   Themovie profiles seminal underground comic creator Robert Crumb but morethan achronology of what the artist has accomplished, the film examines theman’stortured childhood and...

Not exactly the hyper-violent extended cut I was hoping for, but still worth a look. Given the number of franchise reboots in recent memory, it wasn’t terribly surprising when I first heard of Sylvester Stallone’s intention to bring the Rambo franchise back to the big screen. After all, the reluctant action hero still resides among Hollywood’s list of iconic characters, gradually acquiring a growing fanbase over nearly three decades. Though...

Recommended The Movie: Henry Selick’s follow up to the amazingly successful A Nightmare Before Christmas didn’t quite take the world by storm the way the Tim Burton produced exploits of Jack Skellington (who actually does sort of have a cameo in this film if you pay close attention) and company did, but his adaptation of Roald Dahl’s James And The Giant Peach is still a pretty impressive work of art. Once again produced by...

Recommended The Movie: One of the things that came to mind while I was watching Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is the fun and entertainment in revisiting it again. The films that have employed wire work as part of an action sequence have ranged from the ridiculous to the fairly entertaining, but Ang Lee’s ode to 19th century China remains as breathtaking now as it did when it was released a decade ago. Based on the book from Du Lu Wang,...

The Complete Metropolis Directed by: Fritz Lang Written by: Thea von Harbou Starring: Gustav Frölich, Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel, Rudolf Klein-Rogge Fritz Lang’s Metropolis was the first film I ever rented from Netflix. The (then) two-hour German expressionist science-fiction masterpiece carried an immediate appeal for me I know not many will share. Nevertheless, I was excited at the prospect of seeing …  Read More →

You know, I understand the temptation for studios to greenlight direct-to-DVD sequels for semi-popular movies, but I really don’t see why they would bother trying the same thing for a movie that failed the first time around. Can a DTV sequel with a lesser known cast and crew really offer an improvement? Granted, I still haven’t seen Alexandre Aja’s Mirrors , but the 15% rating …  Read More →

If it’s Tuesday, this must be Puccini. Did someone go and create a “ La bohème of the Month Club” and not tell me about it? Sometimes it seems like it, what with the glut of Blu-ray versions of Puccini’s venerable ode to art, love and abject poverty which seem to litter my mailbox seemingly every few days. Let’s review, shall we? We’ve had the film version , the English National Opera version (sung in English, in case you were co …...
