Beethoven’s best remembered mass is given a stellar performance by an ensemble and soloists who may be largely unfamiliar to a lot of listeners. The three titanic “B”’s of classical music–Bach, Beethoven and Brahms–are so often trotted out together that they sometimes assume a monolithic identity which is frankly inappropriate, given their completely disparate temperaments, composing styles and oeuvres . There are always subtle links to be found between at least any two of the three–Brahms can easily be seen as a 19th century protean a la Bach, especially contrapuntally and structurally, and Beethoven and Brahms can certainly b … Video There’s no video per se on this audio-…

Beethoven: Fidelio (Featuring Gallo / Sacca/ Strazanac) (Blu-ray Review)
Beethoven’s only opera gets a beautiful production in Zurich under the able baton of Bernard Haitink. In the world of classical music there are what IÂ’ve perhaps only half jokingly called the “Alpha BetaÂ’s,” that is, the major composers whose surnames begin with B. Any music student can rattle them off without a second thought: Bach, Beethoven...
Minkus: La Bayadère (Paris Opera Ballet) (Blu-ray Review)
Rudolf Nureyev bade goodbye to ballet with this incredibly opulent production of a 19th century warhorse. Not to state the obvious, but nineteenth century audiences did not have cable television to aid them in becoming armchair travelers. While the wealthier citizens of the era often engaged in “The Grand Tour,” visiting exotic locales on guided...
Rattle Conducts Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky & Rachmaninov (Blu-ray Review)
The Russians are coming, the Russians are coming! Nineteenth century classical orchestral music belonged largely to the Germans, despite protestations to the contrary by a host of competing countries. But, really, when one country can hold up such stalwarts (disparate as they are) as Beethoven, Brahms and Wagner, and then bring in a supporting cast...
Keeping Score: Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique (Blu-ray Review)
Berlioz’ most famous composition gets the typically excellent ‘Keeping Score’ treatment in this exemplary offering. Few composers are as saddled with fame based on one singular piece as is Hector Berlioz and his Romantic treatise, Symphonie Fantastique . While the French virtuoso had a long and overall successful composing, conducting...
Delibes: Sylvia (Blu-ray Review)
Leo Delibes offers some of the most sumptuous ballet music ever written with his ‘Sylvia.’ If only the story supported it. There are at least three salient quotes to keep in mind when you first come to Sylvia , one of the iconic pieces of 19th century ballet (even if, in fact, it didnÂ’t make much of an impact back then, having to wait...
Prince & Me 2: The Royal Wedding (Blu-ray Review)
A direct-to-video sequel to a halfway popular RomCom makes for a resoundingly unimpressive Blu-ray. Girl got nothing on you, yo . And so the journey begins yet again. What was once a singular midline big studio Romantic Comedy has morphed into a franchise thanks to the wonders of the direct-to-video marketplace, and the results are expectedly mixed...
La Fille du Pharaon (The Pharaoh’s Daughter) (Blu-ray Review)
The Bolshoi Ballet walks (and dances) like an Egyptian in one of the 19th century’s most epochal pieces of dance, ‘The Pharoah’s Daughter’. When the venerable Howard Carter got his first peek inside TutankhamunÂ’s tomb in November, 1922, he probably had little idea of the international cause célèbre he would foster. By the...
Mayerling (Featuring Watson/ Galeazzi) (Blu-ray Review)
Kenneth MacMillan’s version of one of the most fascinating political and romantic debacles of the 19th century gets an opulent remounting by the Royal Ballet. The worlds of opera, ballet and film are filled to the brim with tales of star-crossed lovers who often meet tragic ends. Romeo and Juliet. Tristan and Isolde. Bonnie and Clyde. Zack...
Virtual Haydn (Complete Works For Solo Keyboard) (Blu-ray Review)
Naxos provides one of the most audacious recording enterprises in recent memory with this splendid offering of all of Haydn’s solo keyboard works. ItÂ’s rather peculiar that such a protean talent as Joseph Haydn doesnÂ’t have the requisite “greatest hits” roster, at least in the public consciousness at large, that, say, Mozart, Bach or Beethoven...
