The heart knows best in this fitfully entertaining thriller. The cinematic trope of donor organs taking over their host bodies, often to nefarious ends, has been a staple since at least the days of good old Igor taking that damnable “criminal brain” and handing it to Dr. Frankenstein, who installed it in his monster. Tell Tale Â’s title obviously harkens back to the iconic story of Edgar Allan Poe, and so concerns a heart rather than a brain, but what really sets it apart is that this transplanted organ is out for some semblance of justice, r … Video Tell Tale Â’s AVC encoded 1080p image (with a 2.40:1 aspect ratio) is grainy, grimy and gritty, perfectly in tune with the dark psychological undertones of its drama. Contrast is frequently…

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (Blu-ray Review)
A filmed adaptation of a classic tale comes to Blu-ray without bonus features. No one need ever die . The tale of Victor Frankenstein and his pursuit to create life from death represents one of the great tragedies of modern storytelling. It’s a tragedy of life and death, of heart and soul, and of the very essence of man. It’s of giving...
A Christmas Tale (Un conte de Noël) (Blu-ray Review)
Nominated for Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and winner of a Cesar award for Best Supporting Actor (Jean-Paul Roussillon), Gallic director Arnaud Desplechin’s “Un conte de Noël” a.k.a “A Christmas Tale” (2008) arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Criterion. Home (Blu-ray Review)
Home is where the heart—and the highway—is. The mosquito buzzing at night in your bedroom. A distant car alarm that wonÂ’t stop. That distracting hum from the back of your plasma TV. The incessantly barking cocker spaniel next door and the neighbor upstairs who wears lead shoes and apparently enjoys rearranging his furniture at three in the morning....
180° South: Conquerors of the Useless (Blu-ray Review)
Sometimes progress is turning around and taking a step in the opposite direction. In my time at blu-ray.com, IÂ’ve reviewed a handful of conservation-minded documentaries, and most of them have one thing in common—they want to shock, scare, or otherwise pummel the environmental apathy right out of you. And fair enough, I think most of us would agree...
Princess and the Frog: Three-disc Edition (Blu-ray Review)
A classic fairy tale gets a jazzy N’Orleans makeover… December 21, 1937. After enduring years of skepticism and overcoming countless obstacles, both creative and financial, a brave young visionary by the name of Walter Elias Disney gave the world its first animated feature film. Perhaps you’ve heard of it: Snow White and the Seven...
Hachi: A Dog’s Tale (Hachiko: A Dog’s Story) (Blu-ray Review)
This heartwarming tale comes to Blu-ray as a middle-of-the-road package. Whether you found him, or he found you, who’s to say. It was meant to be. The world can be, and often is, a cruel place; death, pain, suffering, hardship, fear, and any number of maladies intrude into the daily routine and often come to define the larger moments in life...

Repo Men – Unrated Edition (Blu-ray)
Rent It THE FILM “Repo Men” is a gonzo, head-smashing, organ-tearing delight…at least 50% of the time. The rest of the film meanders about, searching to assume some form of significance. It’s a solid ground-rule double from director Miguel Sapochnik, but the picture is not nearly as deranged as it should’ve been,...
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (Blu-ray Review)
‘Revenge of the Fallen’ lays siege on the brain cells. The fallen shall rise again . Transformers was a fun, entertaining, and altogether novel moviegoing experience. Though based on preexisting characters, Director Michael Bay reworked the look and feel of the world once only realized in the animated and physical toy realms, creating...
White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights (Blu-ray Review)
The White Stripes on tour throughout Canada are captured both personally and professionally in this gritty film by Emmett Malloy. Not so very long ago a successful career in the music business was based on the ability to get signed by a major label. What that meant in real terms was that a cookie cutter approach to marketability unavoidably emerged,...
Echo (Blu-ray Review)
Hmm, this sounds familiar. What do The Ring , The Grudge , and now The Echo have in common? Well, yes, all three have titles with a definite article followed by a vaguely creepy noun, but besides that, they share the same executive producers and each is a remake of an atmospheric Asian horror film. All three deal with unsettling supernatural children,...
