Not much Celtic and even less Thunder in this fitfully engaging homage to acts that inspired the male quintet. They say that everyone’s at least a little bit Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, but I had to wonder if that might be true of the members of Celtic Thunder, supposedly Irish lads themselves who in this odd and oddly pre-packaged concert seem pretty resolutely intent on keeping as far away from Irish material as possible. Of course I exaggerate, but when one comes to a concert by a group named Celtic Thunder, isn’t there an innate expectation we’re going to be treated to the lovely sounds and images o … Video It’s Entertainment is presented on Blu-ray with a largely excellent AVC encoded…

Keeping Score: Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique (Blu-ray Review)
Berlioz’ most famous composition gets the typically excellent ‘Keeping Score’ treatment in this exemplary offering. Few composers are as saddled with fame based on one singular piece as is Hector Berlioz and his Romantic treatise, Symphonie Fantastique . While the French virtuoso had a long and overall successful composing, conducting...
Monsters, Inc. (PIXAR) (Blu-ray Review)
Another must-have Pixar classic gets its due on Blu-ray… How does Pixar do it? How does a single studio consistently churn out such fantastic animated films? At first, I thought it had something to do with raw talent. John Lasseter’s innate ability to assemble the best artists, technicians, writers, and directors in the industry; master...

Zoolander 2 Moving Forward with Tropic Thunder Writer
There have been rumblings that Ben Stiller might drop a Zoolander sequel on us for a few years now, but in the words of Derek Zoolander himself, “You gotta tame the beast before you let it out of its cage.” The original didn’t do all that well when it hit theatres back in 2001 (it made just $60 million worldwide), but it did...
Keeping Score: Ives’ Holidays Symphony (Blu-ray Review)
The great iconoclast of American music is explored in this excellent entry in the ‘Keeping Score’ series. What exactly is the American temperament? That’s certainly a question to be pondered, but if you’re of the opinion that art might reveal something of a national characteristic, there’s probably no better place to start to try to...

U2: 360° at the Rose Bowl (Blu-ray Review)
Shot on October 25, 2009, during the legendary Irish band’s stop in Pasadena, California, U2 360° at the Rose Bowl is arguably one of the most impressive rock concerts to be staged in North America. In front of an audience of more than 96 000, U2 performed a number of songs from their latest studio album, No Line on the Horizon , as well as many...
Verdi: Simon Boccanegra (Teatro Comunale di Bologna) (Blu-ray Review)
One of Verdi’s lesser known operas receives a largely excellent production on this new Blu-ray. It’s perhaps too bad that Charles Dickens never wrote a libretto for an opera, though several of his works have become musicals, including megahits ( Oliver! ), well respected long running semi-hits ( The Mystery of Edwin Drood , based upon Dickens’...
Give ‘em Hell Malone (Blu-ray Review)
A shoddy transfer and few extras contrast against a solid movie and a thunderous DTS track. Some men are harder to kill than others. Fortunately, I’m one of the harder ones. It’s been a largely successful few weeks for the direct-to-video marketplace; the release of the surprisingly excellent Universal Soldier: Regeneration renewed a...

Yellowjackets: The Paris Concert (Blu-ray Review)
The Yellowjackets deliver a solid set in a March 2008 concert recorded in Paris. As anyone who’s ever played music professionally will tell you, it’s difficult, if not well nigh impossible, to keep a group together for any length of time. That makes the Yellowjackets’ achievement something of a singular sensation, as they’re rapidly approaching...
