Breck Eisner directed Sahara, a fun romp but not a great film, and so I wasn’t enamoured when I heard he was helming Flash Gordon, even if it was one that went back to the original Gordon and ignored the camp film version. Now I’ve seen The Crazies (Filmstalker review) though, I’m thinking very differently, and I’m wondering if he really can pull it off. He’s been talking about the film and his plans for it. There are a bunch of rumours and conjecture racing around the Interflab at the moment, and while a couple of them actually have some grounding in reality, and a couple have the men behind the films talking about them, they’re still a bit vague and a little bit empty. Saying that, they’re interesting to consider, and they might just interest...

Let’s be charitable and say the filmmakers wanted this ‘Flash Gordon’ to be so bad it’s good. Well, maybe not exactly good. . . Susan Sontag burst into mainstream prominence with her 1964 essay Notes on Camp, where she averred, Indeed the essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration. Sontag...

Yes, it’s hard to believe, but the remakes of Escape From New York, Total Recall, Flash Gordon and Sinbad are still happening, and that’s from the mouth of the producer behind them, Neal Moritz. That’s not all he has to say, he also reveals that they have someone that they’re going to approach for the role of Snake Plissken,...

Rian Johnson captured my interest with Brick (Filmstalker review), a superb film that showed what a great writer and director he is, but it was ages after that he began talking about his science fiction project called Looper. However it wasn’t until the other day that we heard who was in negotiations to star, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the lead from...

Stone ’s head must be exploding right about now! You see, he’s such an over-the-top fan of the 1980 Flash Gordon film that his bachelor party consisted of renting out the Montreal Dollar Cinema for a private screening (along with Road House and some big screen Rock Band action…yeah, it was pretty awesome!) And now, to see that...

The writer of Shazam, Bill Birch, has been talking about the state of the script he’s writing with Geoff Johns and where the project is, and far from being sidelined, it sounds like it’s moving forward and have a clear purpose, and that purpose is going to lead it into PG-13 areas, as far as the script goes anyway. More than that he’s...

Mark Millar, the creator of the comic book of Wanted, has been talking about what’s in store for the film sequel, and he’s also talked about why the original was so different from the comics. It was always said that the difference was because the studio bought the script to be made into a film before the story was properly fleshed out,...

Recommended Reviewed by Glenn Erickson Comic book movies now seem to comprise 50% of Hollywood’s cinematic output, a major move that probably began back with 1978’s Superman: The Movie . The smashing success of that film sent the studios scrambling to review their contract dealings with DC, Marvel, and King Features. Producer Dino...

It was back in January that we heard Roland Emmerich was going to direct the adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series and lo, there was unhappiness. Emmerich has been famous for his big scale, huge effects, disaster films, and while they were huge on effects they’ve been light on characters and depth. So fans of the Asimov series...

I do find this rather amusing, the star of Paranormal Activity (Filmstalker review), which was more faux documentary than horror or even scare film, is heading for a sequel and the star of the first, Katie Featherston has been asked about whether she would want to return for a sequel. While she’s obviously keen for it, her response makes me...
