Blu-ray Picks for the Week of January 19
January 19th, 2010 admin

It’s another Tuesday with another handful of great Blu-ray releases. In the mix this week we’ve got a comic book adaptation, a couple of fantastic PTA fliks and another incredible release from the Criterion Collection. As always, making a purchase through our Amazon links keeps The Blu-ray Blog on its feet and we thank you for every single one! Whiteout stars Kate Beckinsale and is an adaptation of a fantastic comic book by Greg Rucka and Steve Leiber . I just got the disc in the mail today and am excited to check it out! I’m listing it as my pick of the week on…

I’m a comic book geek. Have been as long as I can recall. A number of years ago a good pal of mine had the chance to work with author Greg Rucka , which provided me the impetus to finally check out some of his work. His graphic novel Whiteout illustrated by the very talented Steve Lieber won me over immediately. It’s a whodunnit in...

I have three copies of Whiteout on DVD to be won, or rather to give away for just answering one simple question. It’s a good film too, Kate Beckinsale, Gabriel Macht and Tom Skerritt, directed by Dominic Sena from the graphic novel by Greg Rucka and Steve Leiber. The film is out to rent now but won’t be available to buy until the 25th...

Oh geez. I usually like to pick a top disc release every week. I usually like to be able to recommend a single title for you to pick up, you know, if you’ve got a tight budget, or just want to see the best of the best. But I can’t really do it this week. There are too many brilliant Blu-ray discs out this week! I’ll…

I don’t know. I don’t think this is a particularly exciting week of Blu-ray disc releases. But who am I? There are a few neat titles, for sure. Hell, there’s something new again from Criterion! But none of these titles are really inspiring me to get out to the shops and buy today, if you know what I mean. Anyway, have a gander...

Happy new year! I hope you managed to score a bevy of excellent films on Blu-ray over the last couple of weeks. I know I sure did. I was finally able to pick up the Black Friday orders I had placed with Amazon (I ship to my Aunt in Florida and pick up when I can. Shipping here to Montreal from the USA is waaaaay too …

What a huge release week filled with amazing titles! Sadly, I haven’t gotten my hands on a single Blu-ray disc yet so I can’t out-and-out recommend any of them from personal experience. But if I had to put my money on any one of these titles being a spectacular and worthwhile purchase, I’d have to bet on The Wizard of Oz: 70th...

Here is a rundown of this week’s major new Blu-ray releases in the UK and USA.US Releases: The Losers. The comic book adaptation starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana and Chris Evans comes as a Combo pack with the Blu-ray,…

WHITEOUT (2009, Blu-ray released January 19, 2010 – MSRP $35.99) Whiteout is the punching bag of 2009. Very few critics were able to find a kind word or two to write about the film. It sits at the bottom of the list of Rotten Tomatoes 100 worst-reviewed films of the decade after lingering in development hell since 1999 and being buried in...

Huh. Well, how do you like them apples? It appears as though a good portion of the best discs out this week are comedies – Classic Bogdonavich , stars of NBC comedies, and a couple of the best Chevy Chase films ever made. All topped off by a brand, spanking new Criterion Blu-ray release. It’s gonna be a good week… 1. CRUMB There...

All right, I’m going to be straight with you here. I haven’t seen a single one of the films being released on Blu-ray this week. This is rare. Either I went out of my way to avoid these movies when they were in theatres ( The Bounty Hunter ) or was just too swamped to make it out to a screening ( Chloe, In Bruges, Greenberg , etc…)...
