Although we weren’t able to attend the Sundance Film Festival back in February, one of the many intriguing movies that I kept hearing about from this year’s festival was a film called Catfish . The unassuming title did not do much to catch my attention initially, and since the film screened under the Documentary Spotlight, I am guessing that a lot of other people probably overlooked it as well. However, it started to build buzz and...

‘The Horseman’ is not (repeat NOT) a western. Revenge films are among the most basic and often among the most satisfying genres in all of moviedom. It doesn’t take long to set up a situation where we find an emotionally devastated protagonist (usually the relative of someone who has been slain, or at the very least kidnapped), give him the tools to enact his justice on the perpetrators, and then simply sit back and watch the chips...

With Steve Carell hitting the talk show circuit over the past week or so to promote Dinner for Schmucks , there is one topic that almost never fails to crop up: the fact that he is only doing one more season of The Office . Carell recently confirmed rumours that he would give up his role as Michael Scott once his contract expires in 2011, stating that he would prefer to spend more…  Read More →

A masterpiece of sight, sound, and story debuts on Blu-ray as a stunning package from Paramount. Is one more body going to make a difference? Road to Perdition is an innately gorgeous exhibit of art moving at 24 frames per second. The film, as directed by Sam Mendes ( Jarhead ) and photographed by Conrad Hall ( American Beauty ), is as visually captivating as it is thematically enthralling, a potent combination to be sure … Video It’s...

It seems like nothing can possibly topple Inception right now, but with the Steve Carell / Paul Rudd comedy Dinner for Schmucks opening this weekend, I have a feeling it might surprise a few people. Reviews have been mixed, but Steve Carell is a huge draw (as Despicable Me already proved a few weeks ago). Also hitting theatres this weekend is the Zac Efron drama Charlie St. Cloud and the talking animal spy comedy Cats & Dogs: The Revenge...

Highly Recommended The Movie:   Once again Criterion brings an important film tomarket.   This time they’ve brought TerryZwigoff’s important documentary Crumb to Blu-ray with an excellent transfer anda wonderful set of bonus features.   Themovie profiles seminal underground comic creator Robert Crumb but morethan achronology of what the artist has accomplished, the film examines theman’stortured childhood and...

Not exactly the hyper-violent extended cut I was hoping for, but still worth a look. Given the number of franchise reboots in recent memory, it wasn’t terribly surprising when I first heard of Sylvester Stallone’s intention to bring the Rambo franchise back to the big screen. After all, the reluctant action hero still resides among Hollywood’s list of iconic characters, gradually acquiring a growing fanbase over nearly three decades. Though...

J. J. Abrams continues to keep busy as his Bad Robot production company has picked up another property for the big screen.  This time out, they’ll be adapting Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel , a graphic novel-picture book hybrid by Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett.  The film will tell “the story of the world’s first robot, who, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fought alongside Teddy Roosevelt and Lawrence of...

Recommended The Movie: Henry Selick’s follow up to the amazingly successful A Nightmare Before Christmas didn’t quite take the world by storm the way the Tim Burton produced exploits of Jack Skellington (who actually does sort of have a cameo in this film if you pay close attention) and company did, but his adaptation of Roald Dahl’s James And The Giant Peach is still a pretty impressive work of art. Once again produced by...

Recommended The Movie: One of the things that came to mind while I was watching Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is the fun and entertainment in revisiting it again. The films that have employed wire work as part of an action sequence have ranged from the ridiculous to the fairly entertaining, but Ang Lee’s ode to 19th century China remains as breathtaking now as it did when it was released a decade ago. Based on the book from Du Lu Wang,...
